EMDR Helps Your Brain Reprocess Trauma
EMDR is a structured trauma therapy that works on how a memory is stored, not on how well you can explain it. The mechanics live on our about EMDR page. This page is about deciding whether to start, and with whom. For the wider view, see trauma therapy.
Insight has not moved it
You can describe your history calmly and accurately. The flinch, the 3 a.m. replay, and the dread have not changed at all.
Small things set you off
A tone of voice, a smell, a certain street. Your body reacts before thinking is available, and the fallout lasts for days.
Your world keeps shrinking
You avoid more situations than you used to, and you have quietly stopped calling it avoidance. It is just how you plan things now.
Trauma can mask itself
A breakup, a toxic workplace, a religious upbringing, or a stressful childhood can all look "fine" from the outside.
How EMDR Works at Bespoke Therapy Collective
EMDR does not change what happened. It changes what your nervous system thinks is still happening.
Finding your EMDR therapist
Bespoke Therapy Collective features EMDR and advanced EMDR clinicians serving Centennial and Denver based clients near DTC in-person and virtually serving the entire state of Colorado with virtual online therapy.
EMDR with somatic work
For when the material lives in the body more than in language, and talking about it has not moved it.
EMDR with parts work
For the internal argument: the part that wants to process this and the part with good reasons not to.
EMDR in Spanish
Processing in a first language rather than a second one, for clients who would rather not translate as they go.
EMDR after abuse
For when what happened left behind a running commentary about what it supposedly says about you.
What EMDR is not:
It is not hypnosis, not a one-session fix, and not a requirement to narrate every detail out loud. If you are in active crisis or need steadier ground first, we will say so rather than start. Our clinical model explains how we make that call.
Frequently Asked Questions about Trauma Therapy
How many sessions will this take?
We will not guess at intake. One recent incident often moves faster than twenty years of layered experience. Your therapist should check in regularly about whether the work is actually going somewhere.
Can EMDR be done online?
Remote EMDR is well established, using on-screen bilateral stimulation or guided self-tapping. Whether it suits your situation is a clinical judgment, so raise it while you are being matched.
Do I have to describe everything?
No. Some clients tell the whole story. Others give a memory a title and a couple of sensory anchors and leave it there. If saying it out loud is the barrier, say that first.
