Sometimes You Deserve all the Help You Give
Bespoke Therapy Collective is a team of trauma therapists in Centennial. One group we see often: people whose daily life is absorbing someone else's hardest days. Family caregivers first, and the professionals who do it for a living too. Our post on help for the helpers covers the terms. This page covers the care.
You caregive at home
No shift change, no handoff, no supervision. You are on call for a parent, a partner, or a child, and the job has no scheduled end date.
You always have to be "on"
It doesn't end. If you don't do it, it won't get done. You know that massive preparation makes everyone's lives or business flow, so you are constantly on your toes.
You feel guilt
Relief at an hour alone. Resentment toward someone you love. Guilt about both. None of that makes you a bad person, just a very tired, very burned out person - understandably!
Boundaries are uncomfortable
You just haven't gotten the hang of that really tough word - no - yet. Therapy helps you strengthen your confidence to be able to curate a more nervous-system friendly day to day life. (One that's truly well-deserved too.)
How Can Counseling Help Caregivers Give and Receive More?
You're always asking how everyone else is doing. This is the place where someone asks about you.
Finding a counselor to help you strengthen boundaries as a caregiver by nature
Caregiving strain is a named focus area here at Bespoke Therapy Collective. It's real, and more and more of us take on these roles necessarily through family or work. People pleasing to the extent it hurts you, means you can't care for others. Let's work on it - together.
Burnout and compassion fatigue
For the exhaustion that sleep does not touch, because what is tired is not your muscles.
Feeling numb
You still do the job well. You just cannot feel much during it, including with the people you love most.
Guilt, resentment, and shame
For the feelings that arrive alongside the love, and the quiet conviction that having them makes you the problem.
Boundaries in caregiving roles
For the over-functioning that everyone around you now depends on, right up until it stops being sustainable.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am not a professional caregiver, just a family member caregiver. Does this still apply?
Yes, and family caregivers are much of who this page is for. Compassion fatigue does not check credentials. Caregivers carry the same load with fewer boundaries, no shift change, and far less permission to admit it is heavy.
Is it normal to resent someone I love?
It is close to universal, and almost nobody says it out loud. Resentment and love are not a contradiction. In our experience the guilt about the resentment is usually the heavier of the two.
It feels selfish to spend an hour on myself.
Almost everyone says a version of this, and almost nobody would apply it to anyone else in their position. Nobody is asking you to care less. The hour exists so the rest of the week has something to run on.
